Other Flooring Types
Types of Carpet
Saxony carpets
These traditional cut-pile carpets feature fibres that stand straight up and are cut into even lengths. They have a soft look and feel, adding a real sense of elegance and class to any room.
Twist carpets
Twist carpets take their name from the twisted fibres used to make them. Added durability is a benefit to buying a twist carpet, however, this doesn’t come at the cost of comfort underfoot, making it a great fit for hallways and stairs.
Loop carpets
Loop pile carpets can create either a classic or contemporary look, depending on the style. They come in a range of styles and patterns, but share one defining feature: the carpet is organised as a series of loops, so there’s no difference between the top and side of the pile.
Berber carpets
Modern Berber carpets are typically light in colour with flecks of darker colours. They are woven with a distinctive loop pile that attaches to the backing and remains uncut. Berber carpets are inexpensive, easy to clean, and durable.
Cut and loops carpets
Cut and loop carpets combine looped and cut fibres to create striking patterns and designs. The heavily designed nature of these carpets made them very popular in the 70s and 80s, however, they have started to make a resurgence in contemporary homes.
Velvet carpets
Velvet carpets are an opulent choice that features rich colours and luxurious textures. They have the curious ability to show both light or dark tones, providing some additional flair to your living space – whilst also providing excellent comfort underfoot.
FAQs
How often should you change carpet?
Carpets are long-lasting products, however, their lifespan will depend on the amount of footfall they’re subjected to, as well as how well they’re maintained. Proper care should ensure that you’ll need to change your carpets at most once every 10-20 years.
How do you pick good quality carpet?
Choosing good quality carpets can be difficult if you have no previous experience choosing flooring. As with most things, the quality of a carpet will be intrinsically tied to its cost, so you may find that you can make your choice easier by setting a budget first. Once this has been set, you can then look into the different types available to you, and assess which is the best fit for your needs.
How do I choose a carpet?
Once you have a budget and style in mind, you may be able to further narrow down your options by deciding on two factors: density and pile height. As a general rule, you’ll find that short, dense carpets are more durable than longer carpet with looser fibres. How durable you require your carpet needs to be will depend on how much foot traffic you’re expecting it to have.
Should carpet be darker or lighter than walls?
If you’re unsure about the right colour of carpet for a particular room, then it’s better to opt for a lighter colour, as opposed to a dark one. Lighter, neutral colour carpets help a room feel brighter and more spacious, whereas darker carpets can often have the opposite effect. On the other hand, darker carpets can absorb heat better than lighter shades, helping a room look and feel cosier in comparison to lighter coloured carpet.
What is the most popular type of carpet?
Twist carpet is the most popular type of carpet, due to its subdued appearance and resistance to dirt. This makes it a very popular choice for family rooms and bedrooms in most homes.
