Types of Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl Sheet Rolls

Vinyl rolls are composed of several layers of vinyl with a printed top layer. This product is typically fitted as one continuous, flexible sheet. This means that there are very few, if any, seams, making it a great fit for areas of the home that are subjected to moisture – such as bathrooms, utilities, or boot rooms. Durable and practical, vinyl sheet rolls offer a huge range of designs in combination with a very affordable price point.

Luxury Vinyl Tiles

Sometimes referred to as LVT, luxury vinyl tiles are either rigid or flexible and are typically composed of multiple layers of PVC. LVT is topped with a design layer that features a realistic design mimicking real ceramic, stone, or porcelain. Vinyl tiles offer a much more convincing look than sheet roll, however, due to the tiled nature of their fit, they don’t offer quite the same resistance to water.

Luxury Vinyl Planks

Luxury Vinyl Planks is the term given to vinyl flooring that mimics the look of hardwood flooring. Similar to LVT, vinyl planks are made from layers of PVC and feature a detailed design layer, as well as a wear layer that gives the flooring protection from footfall and general abrasion. Whilst vinyl planks offer much better moisture resistance than laminate flooring, they must be correctly installed in order to prevent fluid from gaining access through the seams.

FAQs

What are the advantages and disadvantages of vinyl flooring?

The advantages of vinyl flooring include excellent moisture resistance, commercial wear layer, rigid core constructions, low-maintenance requirements, and affordability – when compared to engineered wood or tiled equivalents. Some drawbacks include a shorter lifespan compared to more expensive materials (ie. stone or solid wood) and its non-biodegradable nature.

What is better: lino or vinyl?

Linoleum and vinyl flooring can often be confused for one another, however, both materials offer unique benefits which make them uniquely suited for different settings. If you’re looking for the most natural product, then lino is the better option for you.

Linoleum is made from all-natural materials, however, as such, it requires special maintenance and professional installation. Meanwhile, vinyl flooring is usually easier to install and requires little ongoing maintenance – however it lacks the green credentials that lino offers.

Is vinyl better than laminate?

Both laminate and vinyl flooring can produce impressively realistic results on a budget, especially when compared to the expensive materials that they aim to imitate.

From an objective point of view, laminate flooring is typically more robust, offering a greater range of thickness (up to 12mm) and therefore a greater depth of embossed design, which tends to deliver a more convincing appearance. Meanwhile, vinyl flooring is usually thinner and may appear less realistic.

What do you put under vinyl flooring?

Vinyl flooring does not require underlay, as these products are designed with a base layer that effectively performs this function. With that being said, most flooring can benefit from some kind of underlayment – in the case of vinyl flooring, underlay can greatly improve its ability to absorb sound.

How much does vinyl flooring cost?

Vinyl flooring can cost between £10-70 per square metre, depending on what brand and style you opt for. Vinyl sheet roll is typically cheaper than luxury vinyl tile or plank, which can cost as much as £70 if you opt for complex designs such as herringbone or parquet.

How long does vinyl flooring last?

Vinyl flooring is highly durable and lasts between 10-25 years, depending on the craftsmanship of the fitting, how well it’s maintained and how much use it sees. You can expect luxury vinyl tile to last much longer than cheaper sheet roll alternatives, making it a great value option when compared to hardwood flooring.

Is vinyl flooring easily damaged?

Modern vinyl flooring is equipped with a UV coating and high-performance wear layer which protects the vinyl from damage. The wear layer is a maintenance-free coating that is stain and spill-resistant, whilst the UV coating protects the design from sun damage. Whilst these fail-safes go some way to protecting the flooring, they can be susceptible to damage from sharp objects or heavy impacts.

How do you clean vinyl flooring?

Vinyl flooring can be easily cleaned with a damp mop and some plain water. If staining has occurred then you can use warm water alongside a floor cleaning product. It’s important that you don’t use an excessive amount of water, as any fluid left standing on vinyl flooring may seep through the seams and lead to moisture damage.

How do I keep my vinyl floor nice?

You can keep your vinyl floor looking nice by making sure to sweep or vacuum it on a regular basis. Follow this up by wiping with a mop dampened with warm water to ensure the surface remains clean but is at no point saturated in water. You should ensure that any spill or puddle is mopped as soon as possible, to avoid the possibility of moisture damage.

Can I install vinyl flooring myself?

Certain types of vinyl flooring are well suited to DIY installation, but these still have a minimum skill requirement which can be beyond many. Luxury vinyl tiles and planks are easier to fit than sheet roll, which requires experience in order to be fitted to a professional level.

How long does it take a professional to lay vinyl flooring?

A professional floor layer will take much less time to fit a vinyl floor compared to a DIY installation. The time they’ll take to fit a 12ft x 15ft can be anywhere between 2-3 hours, depending on the shape of the room being floored and the design of the flooring.

How long after laying vinyl can you walk on it?

The time you’ll need to wait before you can use your vinyl flooring will depend on the type of installation method you’ve opted for. Glueless methods, such as tongue and groove (click lock) fittings can be walked on as soon as they’re finished.
